FREN 240 Colonization & Immigration

This course examines the difficulties encountered by the French governments in dealing with the African immigrant populations coming from the former colonies after the Independence. Main topics: 1. The French notion of laïcité. 2. The French Muslim community and the secular state. 3 .Comparison between French and American policies regarding immigration and minorities. 4. Social integration and multiculturalism. Course methodology: introductory lecture, class discussions, movies reviewing and analysis, students' oral presentations. Taught in English.
