EURO 201 European Culture: Multiculturalism and National Identity
The course studies depictions of Europe, multiculturalism and questions of national identity in cinema and visual media forms over different regions of Europe. Special attention will be paid to areas such as integration, assimilation, and acculturation; national, international, and transnational narratives; national, regional, and European identities; cultural encounters and inter-faith dialogues; conflict, intolerance, and xenophobia. Taught in English in two interconnected modules by Profs. Sheffer (Scandinavia) and Rudolf (Germany). It is one of the gateway courses for the Certificate in European Studies and counts toward Mdia 218.
