ART 357 DaDa & Surrealism
A focused study of two prominent movements in early twentieth-century Western art.
Examines the innovative production of visual and literary artists in all media, including painting, sculpture, film, photography, objects, publications, poems, and novels. Featured artists include: Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Joan Miro, Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitters, Picasso, Picabia, Rene Magritte, Alberto Giacometti, Dorothea Tanning, Kay Sage, and Yves Tanguy. Through readings, slide lectures, class discussion, and field trips to local museums, students will investigate the remarkable variety of creative responses to a turbulent and fascinating era in European history.
