Transfer of Credit

Transfer of Credit Policy

There is no limit to the number of credit hours that may be transferred to UT Permian Basin, provided they meet the criteria outlined below. However, to be eligible for a degree from UT Permian Basin, students must meet the following residency and credit requirements:

  • A minimum of 48 semester credit hours (SCHs) must be upper-level coursework.
  • At least 30 of those upper-level SCHs must be completed at UT Permian Basin.
  • The final 24 SCHs must be completed in residence at UT Permian Basin.
  • A minimum of 25% of the total credit hours required for the degree must be earned through coursework completed at UT Permian Basin.

Transfer coursework from other institutions is subject to two separate evaluations:

  1. Admission Evaluation
Conducted by the Office of Admissions, this evaluation determines which courses are eligible for transfer credit toward admission.
  2. Degree Applicability Evaluation
Conducted by an academic advisor in the student’s chosen field of study, this evaluation determines:
    • Whether lower-division (freshman/sophomore) coursework provides adequate preparation for upper-level courses at UT Permian Basin.
    • Whether previously completed upper-level coursework is applicable toward the student’s degree requirements.

Rules Governing Transfer of Credit

To be eligible for transfer, coursework must meet the following criteria:

  • Accreditation: The originating institution must be accredited by a recognized regional accrediting agency.
  • Course Level and Credit Hours: Courses transfer at the same level and with the same number of credit hours as awarded by the original institution.
  • Grades: Courses with a grade of D may be accepted for transfer credit; however, D grades will not fulfill requirements for a major, minor, or General Education.
  • Repeated Courses: When a course has been repeated, only the most recent grade and credit hours will be considered for transfer and for meeting GPA requirements.

Non-Transferable Coursework

The following types of coursework are not accepted for admission or degree credit:

  • Orientation courses
  • Remedial or developmental courses in English, reading, writing, or mathematics
  • General Education Development (GED) tests
  • Vocational and technical courses (unless approved individually by the faculty advisor and the Dean)
  • Sectarian religious courses (may count for admission but not toward degree requirements; exceptions include courses in philosophy of religion, the Bible as literature, or surveys of the Old and New Testaments, which may count as electives)

Physical Education and ROTC Credit

  • A maximum of 4 credit hours in physical activity courses may be applied toward admission and degree requirements (except for Kinesiology majors).
  • Up to 4 upper-level ROTC credits may be accepted in lieu of physical education requirements.

Military Service Credit

Students may receive:

  • 4 credit hours for physical education, and
  • Up to 12 additional semester credit hours toward elective requirements (outside the major or minor), if the student:
    • Graduated from an accredited high school (or a DoD-operated high school), and
    • Is an honorably discharged veteran with at least two years of service or was discharged due to a disability.

Documentation Required: DD Form 214 or equivalent proof of service/discharge.

Transfer Dispute Resolution

If UT Permian Basin denies transfer of lower-division credit from another Texas institution:

  • The student and the sending institution will be notified in writing.
  • All parties will attempt to resolve the dispute per Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) guidelines.
  • If unresolved within 45 days, the matter will be referred to the Commissioner of Higher Education, whose decision is final.

Correspondence and Extension Credit

  • A maximum of:
    • 15 SCHs of correspondence credit,
    • 30 SCHs of extension credit, or
    • 30 SCHs combined may be transferred.
  • No more than 6 SCHs in the major may be correspondence credit.
  • The College of Business does not accept upper-level business courses taken by correspondence.

Evaluation Process

  • Admissions Evaluation: Transfer credit is initially reviewed by the Office of Admissions during the application process.
  • Degree Applicability Evaluation: Faculty advisors evaluate the appropriateness of transfer credit toward degree requirements when the student’s degree plan is developed.

Advising and Support

Prospective transfer students are encouraged to consult with admissions advisors regarding course transferability and degree planning. When needed, students will be referred to faculty advisors in their intended field of study for further guidance.
