Credit by Examination

UT Permian Basin recognizes that students may achieve academic proficiency through means other than traditional classroom instruction. To acknowledge this, the University offers opportunities for students to earn course credit by examination in select subjects where proficiency can be reasonably assessed.

Credit Awarded: Credit earned through examination is recorded on the student’s official transcript by the Registrar. However, no letter grade or grade points are awarded.
Student Responsibility: Students must ensure that official test scores are sent directly to the Office of Admissions for evaluation and processing.

The College of Business offers credit by examination for specific business courses. For details, refer to the College of Business section of this catalog.

Programs Offering Credit by Examination

Students may earn credit through the following nationally and internationally recognized programs:

Advanced Placement (AP)
Administered by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB), AP exams are typically taken in high school as part of the Advanced Placement Program.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Subject-specific CLEP exams allow students to demonstrate college-level knowledge in various disciplines.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program
Students who complete the IB Diploma Program may be eligible for credit based on their exam scores.

Important Notes

Students should take examinations early enough to allow sufficient time for score reporting and processing before enrollment.
For CLEP exams taken at national testing centers, registration deadlines are typically four to six weeks prior to the scheduled test date.

Credit for CEEB Advanced Placement (AP) Program Examinations.

The Advanced Placement Examination is the final examination for a nationally standardized course offered in a limited number of secondary schools under the auspices of the CEEB Advanced Placement Program (APP). The objective of the APP is to allow students to begin work toward college credit while still in high school. Students should check with their high school counselor or principal as to the availability of the APP examinations in their school. The APP is offered once a year during May at participating high schools.

Credit for CEEB College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Examinations.

Under the College Level Examination Program, the University will award credit for only the specified examinations. A student may attempt a CLEP examination at a national CLEP testing center before enrolling and have the scores reported to the University. These examinations are offered monthly at national CLEP test centers. Further information concerning the CLEP tests may be obtained from your high school counselor or principal, or from College Level Examination Program, Box 1821, Princeton, New Jersey 08540.
