SPAN 318 Barcelona in Literature and the Arts

Barcelona ha sido, a lo largo de su historia, la ciudad m·s importante de CataluÒa y, tambiÈn, uno de los centros econÛmicos, polÌticos y culturales m·s potentes del Estado espaÒol. En este curso vamos a tomar una perspectiva transdisciplinaria y exploraremos los grandes momentos de Barcelona a travÈs de su arquitectura, literatura, historia, cine y sociedad. AsÌ, vamos a hablar del Modernismo (con Antoni GaudÌ como m·ximo referente); del papel de Barcelona en la guerra civil espaÒola (1936-1939) y durante la dictadura franquista (1939-1975) y de la literatura de postguerra (MercË Rodoreda, Salvador Espriu i Joan Fuster). El curso va a ser en espaÒol y cuenta como crÈditos para literatura y humanidades y para el Certificado de Estudios Europeos. In recent history, Barcelona has been the most influential city in Catalonia and one of the most powerful economic, political and cultural centers in Spain. In this course we will take an interdisciplinary approach to explore significant events in Barcelona through its architecture, literature, history, cinema and society. Therefore, we will talk about Modernism and its most well-known artist (Antoni GaudÌ), about Barcelona's role during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and during the Francoist dictatorship (1939-1975), and about postwar literature (MercË Rodoreda, Salvador Espriu and Joan Fuster). This course will be taught in Spanish and counts for literature and humanities credit and for the Certificate in European Studies
