MDIA 308 Mafia, Politics and Society in Italian Cinema
Italian directors and scriptwriters have consistently shown a strong awareness of their country's socio-political complexities. From the Mafia to political corruption, Italian artists fearlessly engage with their society's scandals, corruption cases, and untimely and unjust deaths of their fellow citizens. Students will see and analyze films from the postwar period to the current day. Through films like Divorce Italian-Style or Gomorrah, students gain an understanding of how movies centered on social issues can be simultaneously entertaining and thought-provoking. Taught in English. Satisfies requirements for Italian Studies Minor and humanities.
