TRS 868J Faith & Reason in John Henry Newman

This seminar class will explore the relationship of faith and reason through the lens of one of the greatest Catholic theologians of the modern period - John Henry Cardinal Newman. In view of the modern strictures imposed on the Christian faith by rationalism, empiricism, and skepticism and in light of the pervasive prejudice that faith is irrational, Newman advances a profound analysis of the deeply rational nature of belief and of a faith based on testimony that surpasses reason. His thought on faith and reason is of ongoing profound relevance for Catholic faith and theology in the 21st century.
