ANTH 324 Cultural Heritage of Native America

This course addresses key questions about the American Indian past and present. How did people come to live in the Americas? How and why have distinctive cultures developed across this vast geographic area? Who should tell the story of the long-term American past and present? We consider scholarly and indigenous voices in course material, which covers topics such as colonialism, cultural and legal revitalization, climate change, and sports mascots. Our central goals include the exploration of stereotypes, cultural diversity, and sovereignty among historical and contemporary American Indian communities.
