HIST 217 The Vikings
The Vikings are a popular culture phenomenon today, but their fame is not
new. This interdisciplinary class will investigate the Viking period in European history, from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries. We will examine the history, literature, and art associated with Viking culture in Scandinavia and the North Atlantic, in England, and on the Continent. Themes will include myths and legends in poetry and saga literature, the art and archaeology of the Viking period, and the gradual processes of conversion and conquest which reshaped both Viking and European culture.
