ANTH 341 Medical Anthropology

Health, Society, and Culture is an introduction to medical anthropology, which explores how various cultures and societies approach conditions, perceptions, and behaviors affecting human health. People's ideas about the body, as well as the prevention, causes, and treatment of illness, are influenced by culture. This course therefore examines diverse topics such as what counts as mental illness, how systemic issues impact medical practice and care, the role of belief in healing and dying, how different cultures view disease causation and diagnosis, and the way in which medical systems are culturally shaped. It encourages students to have a positive impact on people, the environment, and society within medical and clinical practices by leading with inclusiveness, respect, and accountability to aid the physical, mental, and cultural well-being others.
