NRS 340 Transcultural Healthcare

In this course, students examine how culture, ethnicity, and social determinants of health influence client behaviors, health care practices, and outcomes, while exploring how cultural diversity impacts the delivery of care for individuals, groups, and communities. Students will investigate how healthcare professionals can provide safe, respectful, holistic, patient-focused, culturally sensitive, and equitable care to individuals, families, and communities from various backgrounds.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply critical thinking to evaluate cultural beliefs, values, and practices that impact health behaviors, and create culturally suitable interventions that support equitable, patient-centered care across diverse populations
2. Analyze how cultural perspectives, life experiences, and social conditions influence health beliefs, behaviors, and access to services
3. Apply transcultural and cross-cultural frameworks to deliver culturally responsive, person-centered care
4. Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork with individuals, families, and professionals from varied cultural and social backgrounds
5. Evaluate systems-level strategies to reduce health disparities and promote equity, inclusion, and justice in healthcare delivery
6. Develop a comprehensive cultural care plan using evidence-based practices and cultural assessment tools
