HS 267 Cultural Competence in Human Services

This course will focus on developing the cultural competency of beginning human services practitioner. Major ethnic and cultural groups will be studied, as well as cultural philosophies, assumptions and patterns, and their impact on identity and mental health. This class is accepted by MHACBO to meet certification requirements for alcohol and drug counselors.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Define and provide examples of different forms of racism, such as individual, internalized, institutional, and structural racism in the context of Human Services

2. Identify personal cultural identity and biases, and describe their impact on professional practices

3. Discuss culturally specific philosophies and intervention strategies in client service delivery

4. Navigate culturally significant influences on counseling relationships, process, and treatment outcomes for historically marginalized populations
